The Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) has dismissed as malicious and
baseless a recent story in the media which claimed that the security had
taken over the production plant of Jena Herbal Ltd the company that
produces Covidex.

Last week the media was awash with stories that security had taken over
the production and distribution of the Covidex in the Country following
its approval by the National Drug Authority as a supportive treatment in
the management of Covid-19.

Currently Covidex is being produced by Jena Herbals Ltd, a firm owned by
Prof Patrick Ogwang Engeu, Head of Pharmacology department of Mbarara
University of Science and Technology.

In a press statement shared on their official Media handle, the UPDF
says it is not true that they had taken over the production of Covidex
and that this was meant to portray a bad image to the security.
The statement added that “security does not engage itself in private
business and that the article was malicious, baselss and should be
treated with the contempt it deserves.

According to UPDF,the mandate of the institution under article 209 of
the constitution is to defend and protect the territorial intergrity of
Uganda,ensuring non-violability of peoples and individual rights,the
rule of law and good governance.
