Alebtong district local government wants Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to take over the maintenance of 65km of its roads.

They claim that the district is lacking enough resources to carry out regular maintenance of district roads.

The district vice chairperson Boniface Apunyu says they want to formally write to UNRA requesting them to take over the management of 40km road from Alebtong town council to Kapelebyong district border through Omoro and Adwir sub-counties.

Another road is a 25km stretch of road from Amugu sub-county to Otuke district border through Omoro sub-county.

“We are constrained by limited budgetary allocation of about UGX 500 million each financial year to maintain over 480km of district roads,” he explained.

He added that the money is also used to respond to emergency road repair and fixing of broken down bridges.

The UNRA station manager for Lango Eng. Anthony Okucu asked the leaders of Alebtong district including their members of parliament to follow required procedures of having the matter addressed by UNRA especially through district roads committee meetings.

In June 2017, President Yoweri Museveni commissioned what the State House said were 1,151 pieces of road construction equipment imported from Japan for distribution to all the 118 districts.

The equipment, bought using a loan from the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation, was to maintain the roads under the care of district local governments.

Each district received a road unit comprising one motor grader, one vibro roller, one wheel loader, one water bowser and two dump trucks

However, Apunyu said they currently have only one functional grader because others have broken down.
