Lira City
A total of 8102 residents of Lira city who are believed to be vulnerable have received government’s covid-19 cash relief.
Recently, government announced that it would support 501,107 people in cities and municipalities with UGX102, 425 each to support them during this second lockdown.
The government in April last year during the first lockdown distributed food to the urban poor, majorly in Kampala Metropolitan area, but a number of eligible people said they didn’t get.
The distribution was marred with corruption and accountability issues that have not been resolved to date.
In Lira city, over 15,000 submitted their names to be considered for the cash relief from the ministry of gender, labor and social development.
However, the deputy town clerk of Lira city Patrick Ogweng said they were able to submit the list of 9595 people which was allocated to them by the government.
Ogweng was speaking at a meeting with representatives of the inter-ministerial committee held on Tuesday at the city hall.
Drivers, wheel barrow pushers, bar and restaurant workers, teachers in private and government schools, boda-boda, vehicle washers, bouncers, ghetto dwellers among others were among the categories that benefited.
The commissioner, local government in the ministry of local government Paul Okot Okello says the purpose of the visit was to find out if the cash relief have positively impacted on the lives of vulnerable in Lira city and notable challenges.
Lira city mayor Sam Atul says some people in the city were not able to benefit from the money of a mismatch in telephone numbers and names which did not correspond with registered mobile money names.
Atul asked government to prioritize vaccination of population citing places like Europe that vaccinated her people and they have resumed to almost normal.
Deputy resident city commissioner Lira Eseru Paul warned people to avoid politicizing government programs.
