Uganda to host ICC Challenge League B Tournament next month

Kampala– Preparations are in high gear for the 2nd leg of the ICC Challenge League B Tournament that will be hosted by Uganda from 14th – 28th June 2022.

The ICC Challenge League B is a qualification pathway for associates to the 2023 50 over World Cup.

The Challenge League B is played over three rounds with the top side after the three rounds moving on to the next round of qualifiers. There are six nations in Group B including Uganda, Hong Kong, Jersey, Bermuda, Italy and Kenya.

The 1st round of the Challenge League B was hosted by Oman in 2019 where Uganda came out victors after winning five out five and now sit three points ahead of Hong Kong at the top of the table.

The second round of the tournament will be hosted by Uganda from June 14th-28th at Lugogo and Kyambogo Cricket Oval while the final round will be hosted by Jersey from July 28th-August 10th 2022.

“The tournament was supposed to be hosted by Uganda early this year but was postponed due to COVID-19.  ICC however, kept faith in Uganda and the nation will now host the round in its Capital City, Kampala.” Said Martin Ondeko, the CEO Uganda Cricket Association during the launch of the tournament at  Speke Resort Munyonyo on Wednesday.

He added, “ICC has allowed fans to come to the grounds, therefore fans will be allowed to the various grounds to cheer their team of choice. However, as a host nation, we shall continue to ensure that we look after the teams to ensure that none of them gets in sick.”

While launching the tournament, the State Minister for Sports Denis Hamson Obua directed the National Council of Sports to ensure that the respective grounds are reserved to have a smooth tournament.

The minister’s directive followed a call by Paul Kaheeru, the chairperson Local Organizing Committee for the event to help them secure the grounds to prepare them for the tournament.

“Hon minister it’s important for us to note that this cricket grounds need to be ready for the tournament and standards for the grounds as set by ICC for an event as big as this are very high. The local organizing committee needs time to prepare these grounds and its important that we have these grounds available to us. With that we request the management of these grounds to allow us full and uninterrupted use of these grounds until the end of the tournament.” Urged Kaheeru

Government and several local partners including, Plascon and  Roke  Telkom among others have come up to support this tournament.
