Ebola outbreak: Four recoveries registered, more expected

Kampala-Four Ebola patients have been discharged from hospital after recovering from the deadly disease, the ministry of health said on Tuesday morning.

According to Emmanuel Ainebyona, the Ministry of Health spokesperson, two of the patients were discharged on Friday last week from Mubende Regional Referral Hospital.

While addressing Journalists at the Ministry Headquarters in Kampala on Tuesday morning, Ainebyona said two more recoveries were registered on Sunday.

“I’m glad that as of 2nd October, we got two more recoveries bringing the total number of recoveries to four and I know even the report of 3rd October might have more recoveries because some of the admitted health workers at Fort Portal regional referral hospital were stabilizing with symptoms clearing out so we expect more recoveries and this gives us hope as the ministry and the health workers who are doing a good job and also the community members.” Said Ainebyona urging the public to seek medical attention as soon as they experience signs and symptoms consistent with Ebola to increase chances of survival.

At least eight health workers tested positive for Ebola including intern doctors and senior house officers (all trainees) who were stationed at the centre of the outbreak at Mubende Regional Referral Hospital, according to Uganda Medical Association (UMA). Two of them succumbed to the disease.

Five districts of Mubende, Kasanda, Kyegegwa, Kagadi and Bunyangabu have so far registered Ebola cases.

According to the latest update (2nd October 2022), the cumulative confirmed cases stand at 43 while the cumulative confirmed deaths are nine.

Currently, there is no treatment for Ebola but supportive care including rehydration with oral or intravenous fluids and treatment of specific symptoms improves survival according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
