Rishi Sunak wins race to become UK’s next Prime Minister

UK-Rishi Sunak will be the UK’s next prime minister after winning the Conservative Party leadership contest.

He will become the UK’s first British Asian Prime Minister and at 42, the youngest in more than a century.

Immediately after being selected by Tory MPs he ruled out an early general election and warned his party they had to “unite or die”

The ex-chancellor who oversaw the nation’s finances during the Covid pandemic was the only contender to gain enough support from MPs.

His rival Penny Mordaunt dropped out of the race in the final minutes before nominations closed.

In a short televised address, his first as Tory leader, Sunak paid tribute to outgoing PM Liz Truss and warned that the UK faced a “profound” economic crisis. Sunak said he intended to serve with “integrity and humility”

Outgoing Prime Minister Liz Truss says Rishi Sunak has her full support.

“Congratulations @RishiSunak on being appointed as Leader of the Conservative Party and our next Prime Minister,” Truss said on Twitter. “You have my full support.”

Truss, who replaced Boris Johnson, resigned after 44 days in the job.
