Kaberamaido: Okwir’s widows fight over property

Kaberamaido – Widows of the late Morris Okwir, Director of Dokolo school of Nursing and Midwifery in Dokolo district are at loggerheads over ownership of their late husband’s property.

The two; Molly Akello and Evaline Adyao while at Kaberamido Magistrates court on Tuesday claimed legitimacy over the investments and assets left behind by the late.

Among the property include Dokolo school of Nursing and Midwifery, school van, Lubanga Ber community Clinic Kaberamido, vehicles, plots of land and houses among others.

While appearing before Kaberamido Magistrates court, Evaline Adyao through her lawyer of Okot B`tek and company advocates claimed that she is the legitimate wife to the late Okwir. She added that the late left her children that need support.

Adyao claims that she has documents to the late’s assets.

Another widow Molly Akello also through her lawyer Daniel Odongo of Twontoo and company advocates told court that she was the first wife and the late left her with six children that also needs support.

Akello says she was married to Okwir and that she also has all the relevant documents and land titles to the assets that the late had.

She denied allegations that she had separated with Okwir at the time of his death in November 2022.

This then prompted magistrate Tonny Ojok Obonyo of Kaberamido Magistrates Court to refer the two parties to Lira High Court with all the required evidence and documents.

Mzee John Howard Odongo Okello, the father to the late Morris Okwir in an interview with our reporter said that he had called the two widows twice for a dialogue but one of them has not been responding.

Odongo now believes that the High Court will guide the clan and family on how to handle the matter.

About Okwir’s wives and children

The late Okwir got married (customary marriage) in 2007 to Molly Akello and had three children and one adopted boy. They developed a family misunderstanding that led to a temporary separation. Akello said their marriage was restored and her husband built for her a house that she is currently residing in Teso Bar, Lira City.

In December 2019, the late married (customary marriage) a second wife (Adyao Everline Eromu) from Alwa sub-county in Kaberamaido District. The couple had two children.
