Kampala – Justice Kenneth Kakuru of Court of Appeal is dead.
Kakuru died on Tuesday morning at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, where he had been critically nursing prostate cancer in advanced stages.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing on of Justice Kenneth Kakuru who until this morning was a justice of the court of appeal/constitution court,” Chief Justice Alfonse Owinyi-Dollo said while addressing press at the judiciary headquarters in Kampala on Tuesday afternoon.
“…Justice Kakuru as many of you know has been a valuable member of the bench since his appointment on July 4th 2013 and he will greatly be missed by the judiciary of Uganda and people who have known him. He was through his actions and judgement an excellent human rights defender,” added Dollo
He said the judiciary will communicate funeral arrangements in the due course.
The 65 year old judge had asked for an early retirement which was pending approval from the appointing authority.
Kakuru has been known as a no-nonsense judge owing to his judgements and other court decisions. In July 2018, he refused to concur with now chief justice Alfonse Owiny- Dollo about the lifting of the maximum age-limit of a Presidential candidate.
