Workers’ MP urges councilors to embrace reading culture for effective representation

Mbarara – Arinaitwe Rwakajara, the workers’ representative in parliament, has challenged workers’ councilors in Ankole subregion to prioritize a reading culture to enhance their effectiveness in district and city councils.

During a meeting held in Mbarara City on Friday, MP Rwakajara emphasized the importance of councilors familiarizing themselves with laws, budgets, council proceedings, district activities, and employment matters. This knowledge will equip them to advocate for workers’ rights and speak from an informed standpoint.

Various challenges faced by workers were also discussed during the meeting, including arbitrary dismissals, low salaries, exploitation, and delayed payment. Juliet Agaba, a female workers’ councilor for Ibanda district, highlighted the issue of inappropriate transfers leading to competent teachers seeking early retirement, which ultimately affects the quality of education.

Jesca Mwijuka, the workers’ representative in Mbarara City council, raised concerns about the exploitation of workers within local governments. She cited instances of delayed confirmation letters for validated workers, particularly at the town clerk level.

Furthermore, the workers’ councilors petitioned MP Rwakajara for leadership training at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwazi. The MP pledged to advocate for their request with the appropriate authorities, recognizing the importance of empowering councilors with essential leadership skills.

By promoting a reading culture and addressing the challenges faced by workers, the councilors aim to ensure effective representation and improved working conditions for all.
