Kisoro – Two children have died in Kamugoyi village, Kanaba Sub-county Kisoro district, due to a landslide that occurred as a result of heavy rain that hit the community last night.
The deceased have been identified as 13-year old Laban Irasubiza and Brian Niyonsaba 8 years both children of Babona Gideon and Jolley Jenifer from the Batwa community.
According to Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) spokesperson Irene Nakasiita, the two bodies have been retrieved and handed to the family.
She says their grandmother Gorgeana Juliana (80years) is admitted at Kisoro hospital for further management.
“Our Kisoro branch volunteers are at the scene, supporting the family and other affected neighbours,” she says.
The Uganda Red Cross spokesperson says other Sub-counties such as Murora, Nyarubuye, and Nyundo are also heavily affected, and their team is conducting assessments in those areas.
Due to heavy rains, many parts of the country are experiencing adverse effects of climate change.
“We continue to be on high alert, pass on early warning messages to those at risk using the community radio strictures, as well as offer timely support to those affected,” said Nakasiita
