Awaliwal Leader Remanded Over Aggravated Defilement and Human Trafficking

Soroti. Peter Ebau, the LCIII Chairperson of Awaliwal in Soroti district, has been remanded over grave charges of aggravated defilement and human trafficking.

Ebau, 38, was re-arrested and arraigned in court on Wednesday, with a subsequent appearance before Soroti Grade One Magistrate Kibirige Kasujja Apollo on Today.

The allegations against Ebau are severe: he is accused of defiling and impregnating his 15-year-old housemaid. Upon discovering the girl’s pregnancy, Ebau sent her back to her parents in Katakwi. The girl’s parents and clan, shocked and distressed by her condition, sought help from Simon Peter Ariko, the LCI Chairman of Magara Village in Toroma Sub County.

Despite the matter being reported to the police, the case faced a significant hurdle when the only document proving the girl’s age was tampered with, threatening to derail the investigation. However, during his court appearance on Friday, the Magistrate did not permit Ebau to enter a plea, citing the court’s lack of jurisdiction over the case. Ebau was remanded to Soroti Prison until June 14, when his case will be mentioned again.

The Magistrate advised Ebau to seek bail from the High Court. This case highlights a distressing issue of child exploitation and the systemic challenges in ensuring justice for vulnerable victims. The community and authorities must remain vigilant and proactive in protecting and advocating for the rights of such victims.
