Second Convention of Ugandans in Southern Africa Set for This Weekend in Pretoria
Pretoria, South Africa – November 21, 2024 – The highly anticipated Second Convention of Ugandans in Southern Africa (COUSA) is scheduled to take place this weekend, on November 23rd and 24th, 2024, in Pretoria, South Africa. Under the empowering theme “Celebrating Ugandan Excellence and Development Solutions,” this significant event aims to unite Ugandans in the Southern African region and foster discussions focused on national development.
President Yoweri Museveni is expected to attend as the Chief Guest or delegate a senior official from Kampala, underscoring government’s commitment to engaging its diaspora. The support from government highlights the crucial role Ugandan diaspora play in promoting the nation’s economic advancement, particularly through remittances and investments. The event will strengthen connections with Ugandans living in all the six countries covered by the Uganda High Commission in Pretoria, including Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, and Lesotho, showcasing the warm bilateral relations shared between Uganda and these nations.
The Confederation of Ugandans in Southern Africa (COUSA) plays an essential role in fostering connections among Ugandans in the region. Its primary objectives include promoting trade, investment, tourism, and increasing remittances to Uganda. COUSA aims to ensure that Ugandans in the diaspora are included in national development discussions and that their unique needs are addressed through effective communication with the Ugandan government.
Vice President Jessica Alupo has previously highlighted the diaspora’s contributions, emphasizing the government’s intention to create an environment conducive to investment from Ugandans abroad, while on her recent official visit to South Africa to attend the inauguration of President Cyril Ramaphosa. She noted, “Engagement with COUSA reinforces our commitment to supporting the diaspora as vital partners in promoting sustainable national development.”
Ambassador Paul Amoru, Uganda’s High Commissioner in Pretoria, emphasized the importance of the diaspora in Uganda’s development. “The commitment of the Ugandan diaspora is invaluable to our nation,” he stated. “Their contributions through remittances and investments facilitate economic growth and development at home. This convention serves not only as a networking opportunity but also as a strategic platform for addressing shared challenges and leveraging collective strengths.”
During the convention, participants will engage in collaborative discussions and knowledge exchange, focusing on innovative practices that can drive mutual growth. The Diaspora High Achievers Awards, an initiative of the Uganda High Commission, will recognize outstanding contributions within the Ugandan community in Southern Africa.

The Uganda High Commission in Pretoria, which also represents Uganda’s interests in Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, and Lesotho, has been actively mobilizing the diaspora community. The COUSA Board is led by Dr. Daniel Echun while the Executive is led by Mr. Moses Kibombo as President.
