The Amolatar District LC5 Chairperson, Geoffrey Ocen, has proposed the demotion of non-performing head teachers as part of efforts to improve academic performance in government-aided schools across the district.
Speaking during a meeting of head teachers held recently at the Education Hall, Ocen said there are head teachers in the district that have gone for more than ten years without producing a single pupil in Division One in the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE).
To address the challenge, Ocen directed the District Education Department to conduct a comprehensive performance analysis of head teachers and require them to commit to improving academic results in their respective schools.
He warned that head teachers who fail to register improvement after the assessment would be demoted.
Ocen, who is also the Member of Parliament-elect for Kyoga County North, further noted that teachers who are habitual drunkards should be counseled, and if they fail to reform, be removed from government service rather than transferring them to other schools, saying their behavior negatively affects learners’ performance.
He also cautioned teachers against borrowing multiple loans, noting that financial stress often affects their productivity and overall output in schools.
To further improve performance, Ocen called on the Education Department to convene meetings with key stakeholders, including Parents and Teachers Associations (PTAs), School Management Committees, foundation bodies, and other partners, to collectively discuss challenges affecting schools and agree on practical solutions.
In her remarks, the District Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Rodha Oromo, expressed dissatisfaction with the district’s performance in the recently released PLE results.
She directed head teachers to commit to ensuring that each school produces at least one Division One candidate in the coming year.
Oromo pledged the district’s support to head teachers to enable them to effectively carry out their duties and improve school performance.Meanwhile, the District Education Officer (DEO), Peter Obote, urged teachers and head teachers who were recently transferred to their new stations to adopt a positive mindset and work towards improving academic performance in their schools.
He also tasked head teachers to exercise full control in managing their schools, particularly in supervising teachers, to achieve better results.
According to the 2024 PLE results, Amolatar District registered 57 candidates in Division One, 810 in Division Two, 342 in Division Three, 361 in Division Four, 608 in Division U, and 27 in Division X, out of a total of 2,505 candidates.
