The Office of the Prime Minister anticipates that they will host another 27,000 refugees in the 2026/2027 financial year.
Assistant Commissioner Apollo Kivumbi told Members of Parliament on the Committee on Presidential Affairs that the refugees will be hosted under the second phase of the Development Response to Displacement Impacts Project.
He added that the project is largely funded by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) at an estimated value of US$328 million.
He said that the funds will be utilised by host districts for socio-economic services, infrastructure development and economic opportunities, among others.
However, Adjumani East Member of Parliament, Hon. James Mamawi said the funds should instead be channelled towards improving the livelihoods of the already existing refugees.
According to the report, Uganda is currently hosting over two million refugees and remains a key host country for people fleeing instability in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan.
