Dokolo, Uganda — Dokolo South MP elect Vincent Opito has dismissed rumors of being admitted to a hospital in South Africa, “stating that the death of an old man in the family often brings with it Pestilences and bad spirits, insinuating that these rumors were the result of ill intentions.

‎He made the remarks while adressing mourners and comforting his supporters at the burial of Rafael Ojok, a Red-Devo football club fan who died in a road crash along Kampala – Gulu highway.

The burial took place at Atama cell, Atur Western ward Dokolo town council on Friday.

‎Opito, who won the 2026 election, defeating Uganda’s longest-serving MP Felix Okot Ogong, had been absent from public view, fueling speculation about his health.

‎He walked on foot in Dokolo town on March 5, attempting to quell rumors of hospitalization in South Africa.

‎At several events, Opito said, “I want to thank those who made it to this function… I’m here now with you. Do we have elders here? Elders know what I’m saying: ‘the death of an old man brings Pestilences in the family’ as their spirits hang around to disturb relatives.” He attributed the rumors to the old man’s bad spirit.

‎Opito, a teacher-turned-politician, secured over 18,000 votes to win Dokolo South, ending Ogong’s 30-year reign.

He will be sworn in on May 2026.
