DOKOLO: Millet farmers in Dokolo district are gearing up to launch a millet growing project in June 2026, aiming to establish Aburcero parish in Amwoma sub county as the regional centre for millet and trade.
The project, currently underway, seeks to promote millet growing in the Lango sub region, where millet is a staple food and a valuable crop.

Speaking today Thursday at a meeting organized by farmers under the Millet and Trees Project, Dickens Oceng, publicity secretary, appealed to local leaders and well-wishers to support the initiative.

Geoffrey Odur, LCIII chairperson of Amwoma sub county, welcomed the project and pledged support.
Project Director Parmenas Willy Ogwal emphasized the importance of millet as a food security crop, energy provider, and promoter of cultural values and economic empowerment.

The project also aims to promote tree planting for firewood and other uses.
Millet farmers expressed enthusiasm, citing benefits of growing millet and supporting the establishment of Aburcero as a regional centre.

During his visit in January this year, Ambassador Paul Amoru Omiat, who currently serves as Uganda’s Ambassador to South Africa and is also the former MP of Dokolo North, took the time to meet with millet farmers in Amwoma.

He commended the Group for their initiative in cultivating millet and encouraged them to continue their efforts.
Not only that, but he also promised to seek support for them in their endeavors.

With his experience and connections, Ambassador Amoru assured the Group that he would promote their products to potential buyers, especially to the tourists who frequently visit Dokolo.

Ambassador Amoru expressed his belief in the Group’s potential and his commitment to help them succeed.
