Lira Regional Referral Hospital (LRRH) is making waves in the international health community as it received accreditation from the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS), making it a beacon in providing effective health services.

‎This accreditation is a testament to the hospital’s commitment to excellence and its ability to meet international standards in healthcare.

LRRH, located in the Lango sub-region of Uganda (Lira city), has been awarded accreditation for its Medical Testing Laboratory, Molecular Biology, POCT, and Serology services.

This achievement highlights the hospital’s technical competency and its implementation of a quality management system.

In a statement released by Mr. F. Osman, the Acting CEO of SANAS, the accreditation took effect on 13 March 2026.

This marks a significant milestone for LRRH Satellite Laboratory as it can now operate as an internationally recognized facility, providing top-notch medical testing services to patients.

‎During a Media engagement with journalists from Lango sub region held on Friday at the LRRH Ambulance Call and Dispatch Centre Conference Hall, the hospital’s director, Dr. Andrew Odur, expressed his pride in the staff’s dedication and hard work, leading to this accreditation.

He also mentioned how other hospitals, such as Kabale Regional Referral Hospital, Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, and Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, have visited Lira to learn from their successful practices.

‎Dr. Odur emphasized the importance of sharing vital information with the community, as it can bring about positive societal changes.

‎He stated, “If we don’t make a change in our society, we will all suffer because health plays a significant role in creating a wealthy community.”

Despite the hospital’s capacity to handle over 10,000 surgeries annually, Dr. Odur acknowledges the need to expand the hospital’s theatre space to accommodate the growing number of patients seeking medical care.

He also mentioned the hospital’s plans to strengthen its private wing, aligning with the government’s policy of generating local revenue to support service delivery.

‎He confirmed that the hospital will host the national launch of Lenacapavir, a long-acting HIV prevention drug, scheduled for April 17.

The Principal Hospital Administrator Peter Okello Odeke urged residents to dispel any misconceptions about government services.

Odeke emphasized that such beliefs are often misplaced and do not reflect the ongoing developments within public institutions like Lira regional referral hospital.

‎”By disregarding false narratives and disinformation, individuals can take advantage of the services provided by public institutions and actively contribute to their own and others’ health” he said.

One of the key areas of concern for the public health sector is the spread of diseases in rural communities. According to Consultant Public Health, Dr Misinde Ronie, there are numerous diseases that require public awareness in order to prevent their spread.

‎In this regard, he highlighted the important role that journalists can play in bridging the information gap between communities and health facilities.

“By raising awareness and guiding patients on where to seek help, journalists can be instrumental in promoting the well-being of the local population” he noted.

‎Assistant Resident City Commissioner (RCC) of Lira City, Bonny Fedinand Okello Alele commended the leadership of Lira Regional Referral Hospital.

‎Okello emphasized that leadership is crucial in ensuring the success or failure of any public institution.

Furthermore, he praised Hospital Director Dr Andrew Odur for his efforts in transforming the image and service delivery of the facility.
