Gulu, Uganda — George Ongom, also known as Ongom Lango, a renowned performer of Lango Ululation (Gwong) and former Youth & Children Affairs minister of Lango Cultural Foundation, has been elected Finance Secretary of the Luo International Conference (LIC).
The election took place during a two-day conference held in Gulu City on March 28th-29th, 2026, attended by delegates from Kenya, Tanzania, South Sudan, Congo, and other member countries.
The conference aimed to promote Luo communities in East Africa and foster bilateral relations among member countries.
Ongom, who served under the late Mzee Yosam Odur Ibii for 13 years, said the meeting’s theme, “Luo Language Heritage Inspiring Our Identity,” will help achieve their vision.
He called on cultural and government leaders to join hands with the Luo International Communities.

The conference elected other officials, including Ocan Jimmy as Chairperson, Akello Dolly Ongom as Permanent Secretary, and Ajwang Zainabu as Welfare Officer and others as members.
The Luo International Conference plans to hold its main event in October 2026 at Boma Ground in Gulu City, with initiatives including writing a Lango Dictionary and promoting debate among Luo-speaking people.
On 19 March, 2026, the Luo International Community Office of the Deputy President, represented by Akura John Ukulk and the Luo International Community Youth Leader, Deputy Queenta Adhiambo, wrote to His Highness Dr. Eng. Moses Michael Odongo Okune, Won-Nyaci Tekkwaro Lango requesting for the nomination of two youth ministers from Lango cultural institution to participate in the Luo International Community Youth Leaders Consultative Meeting.
