“The Impact of the Karuma Hydropower and Transmission Project on Quality and Sustainability of Electricity”

Did you know that the construction of the Karuma hydropower line and the 132kV Kole-Gulu-Nebbi-Arua transmission project did not lead to changes in tariffs?

This was confirmed by Julius Wandera, Director of Corporate & Consumer Affairs at the Electricity Regulatory Authority, during a media engagement event at Hotel Good News in Lira city.

According to ERA’s Julius Wandera, it has only improved the power’s quality and sustainability.

This may come as a surprise to many, as the widespread belief was that the addition of these projects to the Eastern power line from Jinja to Lira would have a direct impact on electricity tariffs.

When asked why most areas, particularly sub-counties in Dokolo district, are not yet connected to electricity besides Uganda having regional generation points and substations present , he attributed challenges being faced to vandalism.

Daniel Olinga, the Northern Regional Officer at the Electricity Regulatory Authority, commended both the distributors and generation companies for their efforts in making electricity available to many households.

Currently there are over 2 million households in Uganda that have access to electricity, compared to only 80 thousand households in the past.
