03/February 2025 – Dokolo Woman MP Sarah Aguti donated mattresses to the 2024 Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) stars in the district.
A total of 116 pupils who obtained Division I in the exam were selected to receive these valuable gifts, along with a box and a mathematical set.
Florence Ebano, who topped the PLE 2024 exams in Dokolo district with an impressive aggregate of 6, was also among the lucky recipients.
She attributes her efforts to the significant reduction in the number of pupils who obtained Division Us, which has dropped from over 900 in 2023 to only 600 in 2024.
During the donation ceremony, Aguti also took the opportunity to address a crucial issue that affects many young girls in the community – early marriage.
She emphasized that girls should not be treated as a source of wealth and forced to get married with a mere dowry.
The MP shared her own personal story of how her parents tried to marry her off to a teacher, claiming that she would become a prostitute if she failed to do so.
However, Aguti refused to succumb to this pressure and instead sought help from her uncle, Bishop Meresadek Otim, to continue her education.
Her determination and bravery in standing up against early marriage is an inspiring example for both parents and young girls in Dokolo district.
Francis Ogwal Nam, who represented the Dokolo district chairperson James Otoo Apili, expressed his gratitude to MP Aguti for her efforts in improving the education sector in the district.
He also took the opportunity to remind students who are transitioning to secondary school to steer clear of bad peer groups and focus on their education.
This, he believes, will not only benefit them as individuals but will also help to elevate the good name of Dokolo district.
Meanwhile, David Livingston Okello, the District Inspector of Schools, shed light on the poor performance of Dokolo pupils in the 2024 PLE results.
He mentioned that the district will take strict measures against parents who are found keeping their children out of school during school hours.
This serves as a warning to all parents to prioritize their children’s education and not hinder their academic progress.
