“Rising Cassava Costs Exacerbate Dokolo Dealers”

BY KIZITO OBONYO

DOKOLO: As Uganda prepares to celebrate the 63rd Independence Day this Thursday with the theme “A Reason to Double Our Efforts in Sustaining a United and Progressive Nation,” the increase in cassava prices is frustrating dealers and consumers in Dokolo district.

‎Cassava is the most consumed food during celebrations and Independence Day (UHURU) is the most celebrated day in Northern Uganda, particularly in Lango, as they believe that their very own and former two-time president, the late Dr. Apolo Milton Obote, was the brain behind the transition from colonial rule in 1962.

‎Tom Ogwang, one of the cassava sellers in Dokolo main market, explained that between July and August of this year, they were buying a full sack of cassava from farmers for Ugx. 50,000, compared to the current price of Ugx. 70,000 in the last two weeks.

‎Joan Awidi, another seller in Dokolo town council, attributes the increase to the high demand for cassava during the independence week, which is driving many buyers from other parts of the region to Dokolo district.

‎Betty Apio also explained that the increase in price is due to the inadequate quantity of cassava in villages, which may lead to the end of their business for a period of time, despite having responsibilities such as paying fees and rent.

‎Lona Acio, Patuma Alero, and all other customers in Dokolo main market told our reporter that the quantity of cassava they used to buy for 1,000 is now being sold at 2,000, which is not enough to serve their entire family and any unexpected guests.

‎Susan Atim of God’s Gift Restaurant in Dokolo town council explained that the increase in cassava prices is also affecting customer satisfaction as they are unable to serve the same quantity to their customers.

‎Meanwhile, Bency Akello, Betty Alaro, and Colline Adero, who sell roasted cassava along the Dokolo-Amolatar Road, confirmed that their customers are now turning away due to the high prices.
