27th January 2025 – KWANIA: As the saying goes, “education is the key to success”. This statement holds true for the Lango community in Northern Uganda, where the Ogora clan chief Canon Richard Ogwang Odyero is advocating for every home to have a vision of educating at least one child to the level of degree.
According to Ogwang, without education, Lango will remain in a state of slavery and will not gain the respect they deserve.
In a recent event, Ogwang emphasized the importance of education in the changing world, where technology is advancing at a rapid pace.
He believes that having a degree or even a Masters level education will not only benefit individuals, but also contribute to the development of the entire community.
Ogwang’s statement was made during the coronation of Canon Moses Ogwal, the headteacher of Namasale technical school as Atek Olimakwanga clan chief, where he represented Dr. Eng. Moses Michael Odongo Okune as the presiding chief.
Ogwang also stressed on the need for each home to have a granary or store packed with healthy food to combat poverty, which has been a major issue in Lango since the 19th century.
Speaking after the coronation, Canon Moses Ogwal promised to lead by example and ensure that his clan becomes a role model in hard work and education.
He urged his clan members to prioritize sending their children to school, regardless of whether it is secondary or technical education.
He also cautioned against the culture of selling land, instead urging them to focus on buying more.
Meanwhile, the Pedi Wibye-acel clan chief Willy Omodo Omodo expressed his gratitude towards the different clans in Lango for selecting knowledgeable and experienced people as clan leaders.
He also warned against cultural leaders supporting land grabbing, especially from widows.
In addition, Bako pelkori Apwor clan chief Peter Okello Oyo, who was formerly the chairperson of peace building at Lango Cultural Institution, urged the locals to remain calm and have faith that endless peace will come with strong leadership in the Lango tribe.
Ogwang Odyero’s vision for education in Lango is a powerful reminder of the importance of investing in the future generation.
With a focus on education and hard work, Lango can break free from the chains of poverty and gain the respect and recognition they deserve.
