KAMPALA – President Yoweri Museveni has mourned the late Rt. General Moses Ali, describing him as a lover of freedom, a peacemaker, and a development-oriented leader who served Uganda with dedication until his death.
The President made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing Members of Parliament and mourners at Parliament, where the late Rt. Gen. Ali served as the Adjumani West County MP until his demise.
President Museveni recounted how the late General opposed Idi Amin’s misrule and dictatorship.
“He opposed Idi Amin’s misrule and dictatorship, prompting the reduction of his ranks and subsequently leading him into exile in 1979,” Museveni told the gathering.
The President explained that Rt. Gen. Ali actively participated in the efforts to overthrow Amin’s regime, operating on various fronts and in contact with other liberation forces at the time.
“His contribution led to the realization of Uganda’s liberation,” Museveni said.
On peace building, Museveni said the late General defied chaotic and violent groups during the formative stages of Uganda’s post-1980s revolutionary efforts.
“Late Rt. General Moses Ali defied chaotic and violent groups in the interest of ensuring that Uganda attains utmost peace,” the President said.
President Museveni also highlighted Rt. Gen. Ali’s role in development, particularly in the West Nile Sub-region.
He listed initiatives fronted by the late leader including tarmac roads and connection of the area to the national electricity grid, among others.
Museveni tasked leaders in West Nile to advance wealth creation at household level in order to maintain the development trajectory fostered by the late General.
“Leaders in West Nile should advance wealth creation for their people at household levels to maintain the development trajectory fostered by the late General Moses Ali,” he said.
While moving a motion to pay tribute to the late Gen. Moses Ali, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja said the former 2nd Deputy Prime Minister had an illustrious career spanning more than 50 years in various capacities in the military, civil and public service.
She said Gen. Moses Ali was a courageous soldier and an astute leader whose personal traits of selflessness, commitment to public interest, strict accountability and ethical transparency enabled him to serve the people of Uganda with distinction.
Vice President Jessica Alupo eulogised the late Moses Ali as a good timekeeper who arrived for cabinet meetings as early as 9am.
UPDF MP, Lt. Gen. James Mugira, said Gen Moses Ali had a strong passion and love for the military.
”He also supported and advanced national programmes for the development of this country.”
The 1st Deputy Prime Minister, Rebecca Kadaga thanked late Gen Ali for his exemplary leadership, discipline and punctuality.
Rt. Gen. Moses Ali served Uganda in various capacities over the decades, including as a soldier, MP, and government minister. His death has drawn tributes from leaders across the political divide for his role in Uganda’s liberation struggle, peace efforts, and service to West Nile.
