KABERAMAIDO – Leaders from the Kumam community have warned residents against seeking satanic intervention to harm fellow tribesmate, urging unity, cultural values and peace as key to development.
The call was made on Monday during the burial of Christopher Omula, 85, in Olumai A Village, Alwa Sub County, Kaberamaido District.
Owucu William, who represented the office of the Paramount Chief “Won-Ateker”, in the funeral cautioned Kumam people against running to witch doctors with intentions to kill fellow tribe mates.
He said such acts go against the Kumam cultural slogan “Kumam Nyai”_ which literally means “the tribe should expand.”
“Karamoja tribe sleep with guns in their houses but you will never find them shooting themselves. But we Kumam are going to witch doctors to ask for satanic intervention to kill fellow Kumam,” Owucu said.
He also appealed to Kumam women to uphold decent dressing.
Owucu warned women against wearing short skirts, saying that true identity as ladies is not in revealing clothes.
“Even if one puts on a long skirt, as long as you are a lady, everyone will get to understand that you are a lady,” he said.
Epiu Grace Junior, the Councilor representing Alwa Sub County to Kaberamaido District Local Council, asked residents to embrace government programs aimed at improving livelihoods.
He said Kaberamaido District will see increased government interventions in the new term, including road infrastructure and other development projects.
Ecobu Emmanuel, the Clergy of Palatau in Bira Parish who led prayers at the burial, advocated for peace and unity in families and communities.
He said it is impossible for wrongdoers to participate in activities that develop an area, and urged Christians to do positive things that can transform society.
