KAMPALA – In honor of World News Day 2026, the Media Council of Uganda and the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance have held a successful Editors’ Breakfast meeting at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel under the theme; “Trust, Truth and the Future of News in Uganda”.
The Chairperson of the Media Council of Uganda, Mr. Paulo Ekochu said that News Day reminds him of fact-based journalism. He urged Editors to execute their work diligently as they are the gatekeepers of trust in news.
He asserted that trust in news is earned in the newsrooms.
Representing the Minister of State for ICT and National Guidance, Hon. Alioni Yorke Odria, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Aminah Zawedde appreciated the role of the Media Council and acknowledged the gap between the required and available resources for the Council to execute its mandate effectively.
The PS urged Editors and all stakeholders to avoid misinformation, especially information that tarnishes the image of Uganda to the outside world. She asserted that tarnishing the country’s image affects everyone.
Ms. Lucy Ekadu, President Emeritus, Uganda Journalism Union pleaded to the government and all stakeholders to appreciate AI and integrate it into the curriculum of Education in Uganda. She said AI is here to stay and accommodating it is the safest way to encounter its effects.
Hon. Andrew Ojok Oulanyah, Chairperson of the Committee on ICT and National Guidance spoke about the negative effects of misinformation. He reminded Editors that information travels through generations and is highly considered in decision-making.
In his closing remarks, Hon. Oulanyah, on behalf of the Parliamentary Committee on ICT and National Guidance, pledged to work hand in hand with the Media Council and all stakeholders to ensure proper regulation of the media sector of Uganda.
