DOKOLO – Dokolo District Local Government and the Health Service Department have commissioned a newly remodeled mortuary facility at Dokolo Health Centre IV in a bid to improve health service delivery and ensure dignified handling of deceased persons.
The Shs 75 million facility was officially commissioned on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Dokolo Health Centre IV.
According to Dokolo District Engineer Thomas Kodeos Okello, the project was completed under a three-month contract awarded to AMUWAY Investment Company Limited.
The Managing Director of the company, Steven Menya, said the remodeled mortuary comprises seven rooms, including a fresh body room, postmortem room, fridge room, waiting room, staff washroom and offices.
Chief Administrative Officer Grandfield Omonda said the completion of the modern facility marks a significant milestone in the district’s efforts to strengthen healthcare service delivery, diagnostic capabilities and dignified management of the dead in Dokolo and surrounding communities.
He noted that the project was realized through the local government framework and the support of district leadership, demonstrating continued commitment to the social, economic and health development of the population.
Dokolo District Health Officer, Dr. Samuel Ojok, tasked the health facility management with ensuring proper maintenance of the mortuary.
He announced the user fees: members of the public will pay Shs 30,000 per day for keeping a body in the mortuary fridge, while bodies kept beyond five days will attract a charge of Shs 120,000.
Dokolo District LCV Chairperson Peter Ogwang warned health workers against extortion, urging them to avoid practices that could discourage patients and communities from seeking healthcare services.
Dokolo South Member of Parliament Vincent Opito also encouraged health workers to serve patients with humanity and prioritize saving lives.
Dokolo Woman Member of Parliament Sarah Aguti pledged to advocate for the upgrade of Dokolo Health Centre IV to district hospital status.
She said the upgrade is needed to address challenges at the facility, including inadequate space in the general ward where male and female patients are forced to share, and the limited maternity ward that cannot adequately accommodate the growing number of expectant mothers.
District officials said the new mortuary will reduce the burden of transporting bodies to neighboring districts and will improve the capacity of Dokolo HC IV to handle postmortem services.
