Juba – Team Uganda is dominating the ongoing East African Community (EAC) Inter-Parliamentary Games taking place in South Sudan, capital Juba.
Legislators and staff from Regional Assemblies at the annual competition are competing in various sports disciplines including football, netball, athletics, tug-of-war, volleyball, golf, basketball, and darts for People with Disabilities (PWD).
The week-long competition commenced on Friday, November 25th, and will run until December 2nd, 2022 under them, “Widening and Deepening Integration by increasing visibility to its citizens.”
The Ugandan team has raised the stakes after defeating rivals Burundi 4-1 in an opening football match on Saturday.
On Sunday, the team lifted 14 gold medals, four silver, and two bronze in the athletics competition.
The Uganda male Basketball team also managed a comfortable win of 55-19 against neighboring Kenya.
On Thursday last week, Speaker of Parliament Anita Among led a delegation of Members of Parliament and staff to compete in the games that bring together Regional Assemblies and National Parliaments from across the EAC which also includes; Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo – DRC, Rwanda, and Tanzania.
In her remarks at the opening ceremony, Among stressed the need to widen, deepen and tighten the integration process that will strengthen the relationship among EAC member States and rekindle the integration aims.
Among noted that the games play a fundamental role in enhancing interaction with members of the National Parliaments in the partner states as envisaged in Article 49(2a) of the Treaty for the Establishment of EAC.
“As this year’s theme focuses on Widening and Deepening Integration by increasing visibility to its citizens, such games enhance interaction with the citizenry of the partner states and as a mode of sensitization and popularizing the integration process.’’ Among said.
The Speaker also acknowledged President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, whose efforts under the available regional avenues have ensured South Sudan’s recovery from the protracted civil war to peace and stability including the creation of a unified army that has enabled tranquillity for hosting the games.
The President of South Sudan Salva Kiir Mayardit officially opened the 12th IPG games, which are coordinated by the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).
