Kaberamaido – Jan 4, 2022

Residents of Ararak Village in Palatau Parish, Alwa Sub county, Kaberamaido district are worried over the deteriorating sanitation in the area.

The over 1,000 people in the area have limited access to clean water sources as their only borehole is in a sorry state.

Simon Ejabu the village chairperson blames the poor hygiene on laxity by the community. Ejabu is worried that an outbreak of water borne diseases may hit the village as they continue to fetch water from the dirty borehole.

He said the local council officials in Alwa sub county have failed to take up the matter despite being notified.

“We have been forced to start conducting community outreaches to sentisitize residents on the need to rehabilitate the borehole.” Said Ejabu

Mr. Michael Okado one of the residents in the area attributes the poor state of the borehole to herdsmen who rear their animals around the water source.

Mrs. Everline Aryekot another resident says they are forced to move long distance in search for clean water.

When contacted by our reporter, John Ekongolat the LCIII chairperson of Alwa Sub County pledged to follow up the matter through the health assistant so as to have the borehole rehabilitated soon.

“I want to appeal to  water user committee chairpersons to always report challenges they face to the health department of the sub county. This gives the council time for appropriation when money is allocated” Ekongolat added.
