SCHOOL RE-OPENING: Six-year-old refuses to return to village school, kills self

Wakiso– The territorial police at Kira Division are investigating circumstances under which a six-year-old girl was found dead in Bweyogerere central Zone in Kira municipality, Wakiso district.

It is alleged that the deceased Moreen Nantume was on Wednesday seen by her brother, a 13 year old, hanging on a cloth tied on the middle bed of a three decker bed.

The brother had just returned from school and attempted to open the door but it was locked from the inside. He later peeped through the glass window only to see his sister hanging. He went and informed the mother, Catherine Nakafu, 35, a businesswoman who works in the neighborhood.

According to Luke Owoyesigyire the Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, police was informed and the officers accessed the house by breaking the door.

“Our scene of crime officers managed to visit the scene, picked the relevant pieces of evidence and later took the body to city mortuary at Mulago for a post mortem.” Said Owoyesigyire

The investigative team, Owoyesigyire said, has also established through the parents that the deceased was pending to be returned to the village in Lugumba, Buikwe District, to a school she did not want.

“Investigations are still ongoing although preliminary findings point to the fact that the deceased could have committed suicide.” Noted Owoyesigyire

This is the 2nd suspected suicide incident involving school going children over similar reasons in barely two days.

On Tuesday, a former senior four student of Makerere College School allegedly committed suicide after his father got him a school that wasn’t his choice.

Police urged parents to report to the police or seek professional help whenever they detect signs of depression manifesting in their children.
