Students’ property burnt to ashes in Friday morning fire at Mbarara SS

Mbarara– Students and administration of Mbarara Secondary School in Mbarara City are counting losses after fire gutted one of the dormitories at the school leaving property destroyed.

The fire which broke out on Friday at around 9:45 am razed Nyerere House, a boys’ dormitory that houses 78 senior one and senior two students. All students were at the time on assemble for an administrative address.

Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson says police fire brigade was able to get there in time and extinguished the fire stopping it spread to other nearby dormitories.

“Some of the property that includes books, mattresses and beddings were totally destroyed by the fire but fortunately no student was injured in the fire.” Says Kasasira

He notes that day students have been sent back home to help decongest the school for safety purposes

Kasasira says inquiries into the matter are ongoing to establish the cause of the fire.

This is not the first time the school’s dormitories are set ablaze under unclear circumstances. In 2018, fire gutted Lumumba dormitory that accommodated senior one and two students in a suspected arson attack.
