Hailstorm destroys crops in K’maido

Kaberamaido– Residents of Alwa Sub County are in fear of a looming famine after a heavy rainfall accompanied by hailstones destroyed their crops.

The Tuesday night hailstorm mostly affected Ararak village in Palatau Parish where gardens of maize, simsim and cassava among others were ravaged.

Denis Etengu, a resident of Ararak village said the rain that lasted for nearly 2 hours destroyed his 3-acre garden of cassava, sunflower, millet and his banana plantation.

Babra Among another farmer who spoke to our reporter says they are left with no option other than waiting for the next season as their hopes in this season have been frustrated by the hailstorm.

Martin Elonyu also a farmer says with the current economic crisis, he may not be able to cater for his family as all his crops were left destroyed . He added that some animals were also killed in the heavy rain.

When contacted, Victor Rex Ekesu, the LCV Chairperson of Kaberamaido promided to follow up on the matter as the district had not yet received any communication about the hailstorm.
