Prison warder shoots two colleagues dead in Buikwe district

Buikwe – Two prison warders attached to Bugungu government prison in Buikwe district have been shot dead by a fellow staff under unclear circumstances.

The deceased have been identified as Eunice Abwot (25) from Laroo Sub-County, Gulu District and Edward Namanya (29) from Rwamucucu Sub-County, Rukiga District.

According to Frank Mayanja Baine the Prisons spokesperson, the incident occurred on Monday at around 07:15am when the suspect Jacob Otim signed a gun to go for general duties only to head to the Sentry where Abwot was working and shot her dead instantly.

“On hearing the sound of the gun, the second sentry, Namanya came to establish the cause of shooting but unfortunately he was too shot dead by Otim.” says Baine

He says after shooting the two dead, Otim tried to commit suicide but failed and was then subdued by other staff on duty and detained.

Baine notes that police was called in immediately, took over the crime scene, exhibits and the culprit for further management.
