Manafwa accident: One pupil confirmed dead, 117 injured

Manafwa- One pupil died on the spot and 117 others sustained injuries in an accident at Kufu along Manafwa-Mbale Road in Manafwa district on Tuesday evening.

According to Michael Kananura the traffic police spokesperson, the accident which happened at around 10 pm involved an M/V Reg UBJ 994J Tata Lorry belonging to Bukusu Corporative Enterprise Ltd.

It is alleged that the driver of the Tata Lorry one Godmas Mamai while carrying pupils of Nakhupa Primary School lost control hence overturning and killing on the spot one pupil identified as Thomas Naminayi (16) and injuring 117 others.

“The injured have been rushed to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital,” said Kananura adding that the body of the deceased was taken to the same hospital for postmortem.

He noted that the vehicle has been towed to Manafwa Police Station pending Inspection

Kananura said the driver of the lorry is on the run and investigations into the matter have commenced.

He attributed the cause of the accident to reckless – speeding.

Kananura warned against carrying people on trucks.
