Church sends food to Alebtong as govt’s COVID relief fails to reach rural poor

At least 150 people in vulnerable situations and over 130 orphanage children in Aloi town council, Alebtong district have had their hopes of attaining better livelihood restored during this period of the lockdown.

This was after they were supported with an assortment of food and non-food items by the New Covenant Christian ministries, Uganda to help them push through the tough times of the pandemic.

The ministry gave out 3 kgs of beans, 5 kgs of posho, a bar of soap, a kilogram of sugar, and a sachet of table salt to each of the elderly person, persons with disabilities, and child-headed families.

The shs 9 million items were on Monday distributed at Alebtong town council headquarters and Hope Lives Nursery and primary school.

The director of the New Covenant Christian ministries in Uganda, Egypt, and Thailand Pastor Francis Nyang said they have supported more than 150 vulnerable families and 130 child-headed families.

“The beneficiaries were carefully identified by the village chairpersons,” Nyang noted.

He says chose the category of the beneficiaries after realizing that most of them are facing difficulties to provide meals for their families while others were failing to even feed themselves.

The LC V of Alebtong district Dickens Kennedy Odongo said that the state of livelihood of elderly people, persons with disabilities, and child-headed families in the district is an indication that several people need to be supported by the government.

currently, the government has started giving relief money shs 100,000 to each vulnerable person in cities and municipalities across the country leaving out the rural areas walloping in poverty.

Odongo asked the people of the Alebtong district and other well-wishers to emulate the good gesture exhibited by the New Covenant Ministry and support other vulnerable people in other parts of the district.

He warned beneficiaries of the assorted relief against using it in exchange for alcohol.

The resident district commissioner Alebtong Ogajo Baraza Suleman in his remarks during the distribution of the items commended New Covenant for leading the way for the government to support the vulnerable people.

He revealed that after supporting people in the cities and municipalities, the government will move to support vulnerable people in town councils.

The beneficiaries of the items commended the ministries for turning eyes on them because some of them were already missing meals due to lack of food.
