Lira-Police in North Kyoga Region has expressed concern about the increasing murder cases in the Lango sub-region. According to police records, between January and February, the nine districts of Lango registered 24 murder cases, with 14 recorded in January and 10 cases in February 2022.
The escalating murder cases are being attributed to excessive drinking of alcohol, domestic violence, and land wrangles.
Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson says that police in the region record on a daily basis a case of murder, which he said is worrying.
Okema cited a murder case in Alebtong, where police are investigating the LCI Chairperson of Omoting village over the murder of a 70-year-old man. According to Okema, the police are also investigating Geoffrey Okello, the LCI vice-chairperson of Omoting village in Okuranga parish in Angetta sub-county over the murder of John Steven Eyano, a resident of the same area.
Okello is being accused of beating the deceased to death together with his accomplices identified as; Julius Okora, Alfred Odot, Adeni, Okuli, Agili who are all on the run.
Other murder cases include that of 22-year-old Ema Okwir, a resident of Namasale town council in Amolatar District, among others.
Okema condemned the brutal acts, asking the public not to take the law into their hands.
Rev. Canon Esau Omara Ejon, the West Lango Diocesan secretary blames the escalating murder cases on the laxity of the police to conduct community policing and crime prevention programs.
He said the church has taken a step to strengthen council sessions to mitigate the crime cases.
Ambrose Okello, a resident of Ngetta village in Lira City East Division says the increased number of murder cases can be addressed through community policing and crime prevention initiatives, something he said has been ignored by the police.
The Lango Cultural Foundation Premier Eng. Robert James Ajal cited drug abuse and poverty as factors heightening murder cases in Lango. He says the cultural leaders plan to constitute a By-law to regulate the sale and alcohol consumption to reduce murder cases in the region.
