Lira – Police at Lira-City CPS are investigating attempted murder of a S.4 student of Lira Town College by a security guard during a scuffle.

It’s alleged that on Monday, April 11, 2023 at around 7:30 pm, the security guard attached to SGA identified as Francis Odom while escorting his girlfriend who is also a student at the same school, met the victim Morris Odongo (19) and other students who had escaped from the school through jumping over the wall fence.

The students allegedly attacked the security guard causing a scuffle at that moment prompting the latter to shoot and injure Odongo on the right lower leg before taking off with the girl.

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga region police spokesperson says their team of detectives responded immediately at the scene and rushed the victim to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.

“…one cartridge was recovered at the scene and exhibited, blood sample of the victim has been picked for analysis at Government Analytical Laboratory,” Okema said in a statement on Wednesday.

He said their team of intelligence and flying squad moved on ground and apprehended the suspect together with the girl from his rental home in Tekulu cell and recovered the gun used.

“Both cartridge and gun recovered will be submitted to ballistic experts for analysis,” he said.

Meanwhile, Okema warned students of Lira Town College against illicit behavior following complaints from the public.

“On many occasions we have registered several complaints from members of the public about students of Lira Town College snatching valuable items such as phones, bags, laptops, food items from market vendors such as water melon etc and even raping women,” said Okema

He added, “We therefore want to advise and direct students to follow school rules and regulations as well as school programs, they should avoid initiating personal programs while at school, in a similar manner, management must also come with strict mechanism of handling such errands students,”

Okema said they are going to use this incident to strengthen the need for community policing at Lira Town College and other schools.
