Worldwide Mothers’ Union president visits Uganda

Kampala – The worldwide president of the Anglican movement Mothers’ Union Sheran Harper is in Uganda on a five-day visit.

The leader of the world’s oldest and largest women’s movement arrived in the country on Tuesday night from London, UK accompanied by the Chief Executive Officer Mother’s Union Bev Jullien.

On Wednesday, the duo was officially welcomed at Namirembe Diocese Mother’s Union offices by the Provincial Mothers’ Union President Grace Murengezi, the Namirembe Diocese Mother’s Union President Roseline Binji Kawiiso and other executive members of the movement in the diocese. The guests were later taken around the different projects by the Namirembe Mothers’ Union.

While addressing journalists in Kampala, Harper said her visit to Uganda was inspired by the good conduct of Ugandans she’s been interacting with in London.

“Coming to Uganda is truly an honor and I think it’s a visit that has been ordained by God for such a time like this when the Province of the Church of Uganda and the Mothers’ Union in this province and every diocese are doing amazing work which we have heard about including work in the communities, fighting gender-based violence, work with children and families all to transform the lives of individuals, families, and communities,” she said

Besides supporting spiritual development and growth of their members, the Mothers’ Union – Namirembe Diocese mentioned several income-generating projects that they undertake including running a girls’ hostel, Mothers’ Union shop and a learning center known as Mothers Union Nursery School among others.

Meanwhile, when asked to comment about teenage pregnancies, one of the issues being tackled by the Mothers’ Union in Uganda, Harper advised that there’s a need for proper upbringing of the children in a way that they can make the right choices as they move along in their lives.

Harper was however  reluctant to comment about the thorny issue of homosexuality that recently saw church leaders at the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) in Rwanda withdrawing their recognition of the Church of England and the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, as its leader over the blessing of same-sex couples.

When tasked by journalists, she said, “I encourage all of you to remain faithful to the God you serve, God has given us a book and that is our Bible for life. Everything in this life is in there for us to know.”

Sheran Harper was installed as the Mother’s Union Worldwide President at the Southwark Cathedral in London in 2019 having been elected to the position the previous year.

Established in 1876, Mothers’ Union is a Christian organisation in the Anglican Church that has been supporting families worldwide for over 140 years, with over 4 million members in 84 countries.
