UPDF soldier arrested over highway extortion

An officer of the Uganda People’s Defense Forces attached to Bombo general army headquarters has been arrested over alleged extortion of money from travelers along the Lira-Kamdini highway.

On Thursday , travelers along the highway complained that the UPDF soldier and another two people were extorting money from them without clear justification.

Mr Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga regional police spokesman said police received information at  Kamdini police station from District CID Oyam that the suspects who were traveling in a motor vehicle registration number UAT 491L were receiving money from people along the highway. Mr Okema says the police highway patrol team was informed and they followed the complaint and managed to impound the said vehicle in Karuma at around 5:00 pm.

The three suspects were identified as RA141534 staff Sgt Mugisha David attached to general headquarters Bombo, Ocan Sale and Odongo Ben. According to Mr Okema, a search was conducted and shs fifty thousand was recovered in the pocket of the army officer which he confessed had robbed from people.

The suspects are currently being held at Kamdini police station as files are being compiled for charges of robbery under SD Ref 12/01/07/2021.
