Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS)  has released the 2019/20 National Household survey report indicating an increase in the poverty level in Lango from 16% in 2017 to 23% in 2020.

According to UBOS report, the regions that  poverty level increased includes Acholi (from 33% in 2017 to 68% in 2020), Ankole (from 7% to 12%), Karamoja (from 60% to 66%), Kigezi (from 12% to 28%), Tooro (from 11% to 13%), and North Buganda (from 11% to 14%)

Lango sub-region has nine districts of Lira, Otuke, Alebtong, Dokolo, Amolatar, Kwania, Apac, Kole and Oyam.

It also has Apac municipality and Lira city.

Speaking to LBS radio, the clan leader of Atek Opaoyat Moses Ongeng attributed the increase to high population growth in Lango and the entire country.

However, Mathew John Bull Owaa, the clan head of Arak Okwerocoboro said the government has not engaged leaders in serious poverty alleviation sensitization.

Owaa also faulted the government for not regulating uniform market prices of goods and allowing investors to exploit farmers.

Youth and children affairs minister at Lango cultural foundation George Ongom says over reluctance and poor planning by the people of Lango is attributed to the increasing poverty in Lango.
