Former Division Councilors move to sue Lira City Division over unpaid Emoluments

Former councilors of Ojwina Division has filed a notice of intention to sue the leadership of Lira city West Division over unpaid arrears.

The 22 councilors gave Lira City West seven days to clear their accumulated emoluments, less they will be sued.

The councilors are; Awongo Patrick, Wacha Francis Geoffrey who is the former vice chairman Ojwina division, Athieno Grace and Oryema Caesar.

Others are Ongom Bosco Goi, Adongo Jacinta and Achola Pauline among others.

Through their lawyer Okwi and Company Advocates, the councilors are demanding Shs 66,598,000 being unpaid emoluments from November 2019 to May 2021.

They are also demanding additional Shs 40 million for damages, Shs 5 million for legal fees within seven days.

“Take notice that your failure to pay our clients their emoluments is illegal, fraudulent and amounts to an abuse of public office,” part of the notice reads.

Wacha Francis, a councilor of Ober ward said the division authority told there was no money to pay them and yet the minister of local government Raphael Magyezi directed that they should be paid.

When contacted for comment, the division town clerk Lira City West Lillian Ocare acknowledged receipt of the demand notice.

She said the letter will be forwarded to their lawyer for consideration.
