Oyam North goes to the polls today

Oyam – The people of Oyam North county in Oyam district will today Thursday, July 6, 2023, elect a new Member of Parliament.

The vacancy for the Directly-elected Member of Parliament, Oyam County North Constituency, occurred as a result of the death of the former Member of Parliament, the late Col (Rtd) Charles Okello Engola on 2nd May 2023.

Four candidates are in the race including the son of the late Charles Engola,
Samuel Okello Engola who is the National Resistance Movement candidate.

The others are Eunice Apio Otuko (Uganda Peoples’ Congress), Freddy Newton Okello (Forum for Democratic Change) and Daniel Okello (National Unity Platform)

According to Electoral Commission, 90,733 registered voters in Oyam County North Constituency are eligible to participate in Thursday’s polls.

“Voting shall be by universal adult suffrage and shall take place at all the 167 polling stations in Oyam County North, beginning at 7:00 am and ending at 4:00 pm. Thereafter, the counting of votes and announcing of results by the respective Presiding Officer shall take place,” said Justice Simon Byabakama in a statement on Wednesday

He urged voters to turn up early at their respective polling stations so that polling processes commence on time.

The Electoral Commission has gazetted Oyam District Council Hall, in Oyam Town Council, as the election results Tally Center for this by-election.

The Commission says the Tally Center is restricted to only authorised persons who shall have the respective accreditation tags/cards.
