Government is set to release UGX 50 billion for the compensation of war claimants in Lango, Acholi and Teso sub regions.

Early this year, President Yoweri Museveni pledged in his campaign in Lango to allocate UGX 50 billion to each sub-region of Lango, Teso and Acholi.

The matter was last week raised by some members of parliament who were concerned about the delay by the government to release the money.

Parliament then tasked the deputy Attorney General Jackson Kafuuzi to give a status report to Parliament over the same.

On Tuesday, the Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka reported to Parliament that the government will release UGX 50 billion this financial year [2021/22] for the three sub-regions.

“In 2018, the government conducted the verification of claimants during exercises which were held at different sub-county and district headquarters. We will release UGGX 50 billion this financial year then release another UGX 100 billion in the subsequent years”, he said.

Kiryowa added that the Ministry of finance has provided UGX 2.9 billion to conclude the verification and validation exercise for all the affected sub-regions within this financial year.

He says President Yoweri Museveni has directed that shs 50 billion be provided this financial year.

“At the end of this quarter, the verification will be done and a report will be presented to Parliament”, he explained.

Kitgum district woman Member of Parliament Lillian Aber said the issue of cattle compensation is almost becoming a campaign tool against the government.

Aber also said Members of Parliament should be given copies of the list of claimants for proper scrutiny to avoid future complaints on ghost payments.

The deputy speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Anita Among Annet who presided over the Tuesday’s session tasked the office of the Attorney General to update Parliament on the progress the government is making after every two weeks.
