K’maido service commission on the spot over staff recruitment

Kaberamaido District Service Commission is on the spot over the recent recruitment of staff at the district.

The commission is being accused of bribery and irregularities in the recruitment process.

The district advertised 135 positions in September 2021 following a resolution from the council sitting on 29th September 2021.

However, the district this month recruited and appointed more 26 staff, a move John Kasadha, the Kaberamaido Chief Administrative Officer says was done after they realised a need for more staff than the earlier advertised number.

The additional staff include one parish chief, 15 education assistants, six enrolled nurses and four enrolled midwives.

Simon Elepu who applied for a position of assistant inventory management officer also accuses the commission of soliciting bribes from applicants.

While speaking to our reporter, Elepu alleged that he was asked a shs 1 million bribe by some members on the commission but he didn’t succeed.

The district vice chairperson, Betty Wabule also faults the procedure of recruitment by the District Service Commission.

Following these allegations, a section of the district councilors have vowed to move a motion to have the commission dissolved.

Grace Junior Epiu, the district youth councilor is disappointed with the corruption allegations marred by the commission.

Judith Isaa, councilor representing Kaberamaido Town Council and Kaberamaido Sub County said the acts by the commission are tarnishing the image of their district.

When contacted by LBS Newsday, Damiano Eboku, the chairperson Kaberamaido District Service Commission  said he wasn’t aware of any bribery and irregularities in the recruitment process and so couldn’t comment much.

This is not the first time the district has been accused of bribery in the recruitment process.

In November 2021, two district officials were on the spot for allegedly extorting money from an applicant for the position of health assistant.

However, the implicated officials denied involvement in the act.
