Gov’t has no control over rising commodity prices- Nabbanja

Kampala – Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has said government has no control over the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities since it is a global crisis.

Addressing journalists at parliament on Tuesday, Prime Minister Nabbanja noted that the rising prices is a global phenomenon that is primarily as a result of reopening of the economy after the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have taken trouble to find out what is happening in our neighboring countries and the prices there are also going up. This is because some of the raw materials used to make these commodities are imported and are currently on high demand since countries opened up at the same time.” Said Nabbanja.

She also partly blamed the crisis on speculation where some local traders have resorted to hodding these commodities.

The premier is however optimistic that the situation is going to be shortlived as the manufacturing campanies continue to produce to the satisfaction of the global demand.

She advised Ugandans to use the commodities sparingly as they wait for the situation to normalise.

Last week, the situation prompted a debate in Cabinet and parliament, which resulted in a meeting on Friday between the prime minister and executives of companies that manufacture household items, to persuade them to ease the prices and the cost of living
