Among hasn’t resigned to stand for speakership – Obore clarifies

Kampala-The Clerk to Parliament has not received any resignation from the Deputy Speaker Anita Annet Among.

This has been disclosed by Chris Obore, the Director Communications and Public Affairs Department at Parliament.

Earlier reports had indicated that Deputy Speaker had resigned her position to contest for the Position of Speaker.

However, according to Obore, there is no legal requirement for the deputy speaker to resign if she needs to vie for position of Speaker.

“Its members of Cabinet that the law commands to resign first.” Said Obore in a tweet on Monday evening.

The NRM caucus Vice Chairperson Herbert Kinobere confirmed Among will be expressing her interest on Tuesday in the speakership race as NRM flag bearer at the party electoral commission offices.

This is after the NRM Electoral Commission chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi announced that expression of interest for the Speaker of parliament will kick off on Tuesday at 8am at the NRM EC offices.

Earlier reports had indicated that Deputy Speaker had resigned her position to contest for the Position of Speaker.

Election of the speaker is scheduled for Friday, government announced on Monday.

The parliament election process is presided over by the Chief Justice or a Judge designated by the Chief Justice until the new Speaker takes an oath.

The process is to ensure that a new Speaker presides over a Special sitting to eulogize the fallen predecessor, Jacob Oulanyah who died on Sunday in Seattle, United States of America.

Article 82 (4) of the Constitution requires that no business shall be transacted in Parliament other than an election of Speaker at any time that office is vacant.
