Forget about salary increment now, M7 maintains stance on Arts teachers

Kampala– President Yoweri Museveni has maintained his stand on increasing salaries only for science teachers.

The president and First Lady Janet Kataha Museveni who doubles as the Minister for Education and Sports on Monday afternoon met with leaders of the Uganda National Teacher’s Union (UNATU) in their regional clusters at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.

The president says much as the arts teachers insist government should use the available resources to improve salaries across the board, this will not solve the salary issue.

“While government acknowledges the issues raised by the Arts teachers, it is also aware of salary issues from other workers; the army and Police officers among others who are equally important to the growth and development of this country.” He said

He added, “We have provided a position as government and pledged to competitively remunerate workers guided by a science-led strategy. This does not mean we have forgotten others, but we are choosing to prioritize the few and others can come later. We must finish one problem at a time.

The president further said, “We have a strategy and no one should disrupt us. We are aware of the issues and we are committed to handling them. Therefore, my advice to the teachers is that they should go back and teach.”

Monday’s meeting followed the teacher’s rejection of a “new deal” proposed by the Ministry of Public Service.
