Amb. Amoru presents credentials to Namibian President

Namibia – Uganda’s High Commissioner to Southern Africa Paul Amoru on Thursday presented his credentials to the President of the Republic of Namibia Hage Geingob in Windhoek.

In his remarks, Amb. Amoru highlighted the excellent and cordial relations enjoyed by the two countries.

“As I commence my tenure of duty, I am cognizant of the cordial and fraternal relations between our two countries. Uganda commits to deepen the scope of our bilateral relations and to equally support the agenda of accelerating intra-African trade, while enhancing coordination with regional and international organizations,” said Amoru.

He noted that the level of trade and investment between Uganda and Namibia is still low but with a huge potential to explore and expand.

“We believe that our two countries will strengthen their Trade and Investment Relations through the operationalization of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area and establishment of Agreements on enhancing trade and Investment. During my tenure, we shall further strengthen the level of cooperation between the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Uganda Chamber of Commerce and Industry,” said the High Commissioner

Uganda’s priority areas of interest with Namibia include value addition in the beef industry, Agriculture – coffee and tea, and boosting cooperation in tourism and hospitality industry.

Namibia is home to over 250 Ugandans, living and working in sectors such as Education, Health, Energy, Hotels, Tourism and Hospitality.

There are strong people-to–people contacts that bode well for the two respective countries, including a recent marriage between Uganda’s senior presidential aide on youth affairs and Nambia president’s daughter and Advisor, Daisry Mathias, now Obal.

On the business front, Amoru said, these people-to-people relations have led to the realization of considerable investments and direct businesses in either country. Notable among these, is the cooperation between Namibian hotel owners and the Uganda Hotel and Tourism Training Institute, which offers trainings and conducts research in Tourism and Hospitality, to advance skills and knowledge in the industry.

“During my tenure, we shall encourage our respective business communities to accelerate their efforts to tap into the tourism potential of our countries through sharing best practices, establishment of smart partnerships and joint ventures, as well as exchange training programs for the mutual benefit of our people,” he said

The High Commissioner said he looks forward to further build upon the achievements of his predecessors, with a focus on promoting commercial and economic diplomacy.

On his part, Namibia Hage Geingob congratulated Amoru upon being appointed the High Commissioner Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Uganda to the Republic of Namibia and wished him the very best in his new assignment.
