Just in: Military court drops charges against Kayihura

Kampala – The General Court Martial has dropped charges against Former Inspector General of Police Gen. Kale Kayihura.

Kayihura faced charges, which included failure to protect war materials and aiding and abetting the kidnapping and repatriation of Rwandan exiles, refugees and Uganda citizens to Rwanda between 2012 and 2016.

The charges were filed in 2018, months after being dropped as police chief.

The General Court Martial in Makindye, Kampala, presided over by Brig. Gen. Freeman Mugabi, on Wednesday, set Kayihura free after the state, led by Lt.Col. Raphael Mugisha told court that the Director of Public Prosecution had withdrawn charges against him.

During the 2021 general election campaigns, the NRM leaders in Kisoro district asked President Museveni to pardon their son, Gen Kayihura so he could be redeployed.

The president said he would work on the request.Recently, the First Son and Special Presidential Advisor of Special Operations Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba pleaded with President Museveni to pardon Gen Kayihura and rehabilitate him.

The development comes as the former IGP is set to be retired from active service in the Army tomorrow, Thursday August 31, 2023.

Others set to retire include Lt. Gen. James Nakibus Lakara, Maj. Gen. Samuel Wasswa Mutesasira, Maj. Gen. James Arocha and Maj. Gen. David K. Wakaalo among others.
