Lira businessman kills son during fight over gun

Lira – Police at Lira-City Central Police Station (CPS) are investigating circumstances under which a businessman killed his son in Kamuswahili Cell, Lira-City East Division.

The suspect Haji Joe Ogwang (57) a businessman and a resident of Ireda Estate in Lira-City East Division is said to have shot his son identified as Haron Okello during a confrontation on Tuesday at around 2:15 pm.

It’s alleged that while Ogwang was at Kamuswahili cell doing his daily business, he was confronted by Okello who is his biological son demanding for money. In the process of the confrontation, Okello (deceased now) tried to disarm his father of a pistol in his possession, and in self-defence, the father (Ogwang) discharged a bullet that injured him. Okello was later rushed to Lira Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Jimmy Okema the North Kyoga police mouthpiece says preliminary findings indicate that Okello was an army deserter and a drug abuser.

“Scene was visited by both DPCs of Lira City CPS and Lira City West Division together with the Division CID Officers and a SOCO. Sketch plan was drawn by detectives, some statements recorded from eyewitnesses, Case file registered under CRB 1002/2023, Pistol No UG IND 99702870 with 5 rounds of ammunition recovered and exhibited,” said Okema in a statement on Tuesday afternoon.

He noted that police are yet to a certain whether the suspect acquired the pistol legally through the license he holds.

Okema added that the suspect handed over himself to police and is in detention at Lira-City CPS as investigation continues.

He says the deceased body was conveyed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital’s mortuary pending postmortem.
