Local council one chairpersons in Alebtong District are demanding better pay from the government to enable them carry out their different roles effectively.

The leaders are concerned that what they earn from the government is meagre to run their offices for a year.

The government of Uganda pays an annual Ex-gratia of one hundred twenty thousand shillings; meaning they earn ten thousand shillings per month.

However, during a meeting with officials from the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) at Apala Town Council, the LC’s expressed their grievances and called on the government to increase their pay.

They are claiming that it is out of their efforts in enforcing covid-19 standard operating procedure that government is successful in managing covid-19 in Uganda

Speaking on their behalf, the LC III of Apala Town Council George Opio says LC’s are playing a vital role in enabling the government programs to reach out to the wanahinci.

Opio however, appreciated NIRA officials for having responded to the public outcry and reaching out to the public to conduct National ID Registration and Issuance.

Meanwhile, the Alebtong District Registration Officer – NIRA, Godfrey Babi Kimera says they have embarked on community outreach to ensure that more people get registered so as to benefit from the different government programs.

The Resident District Commissioner Alebtong, Ogajo Baraza Sulaiman, who also attended the meeting, appealed to all Ugandans to take up the opportunity and register to acquire National IDs before it’s too late.

“You have seen how useful a national ID is in order to access social services, in future, it may be a requirement for one to attend a burial like in the Western countries,” Ogajo noted.
